This 6th Proceedings of the biennial Australasian
Pig Science Association conference is bigger than that of 1995 with three invited reviews
and three symposia backed by 117 submitted papers, which appear as one-page papers in the
proceedings. The volume provides 313 pages of concentrated information in a hardcover
volume. Each published paper has been reviewed by at least two external referees to
maintain quality in the published material. Invited Reviews:
Growth, development and nutrient metabolism in piglets and infants; Management and
nutrition of the early weaned sow; and, Pig genetics into the 21st Century. Symposia:
Strategies to improve consistency of pork quality - towards 2010; Sustaining supply and
improving the utilisation of feed grains by the pig industry; and, The impact of pig
production on the environment, and opportunities for future control.
The short oral and poster presentations were given under the headings: Reproduction,
Lactation and Pre-weaning Growth; Meat Quality and Meat Hygiene; Genetics and Animal
Breeding; Animal Health; Applied Nutrition and Nutrient Digestibility; Pig Production and
the Environment; and, Growth, Development, Health and Environment.
While most of the papers are the latest in research from Australia and New Zealand,
with 40 of the 250 plus delegates coming from 12 other countries, there was definitely an
international flavour present.
