This massive hardbound volume of 326 pages was the outcome of
the exciting second conference of the Australasian Pig Science Association. The
three Reviews were: The effects of handling, transport, slaughter and chilling on meat
quality and yield in pigs; Sow lactation; and, Designing the pig pen.
These are three areas of critical importance, and well worth checking out! The six
Symposia presented detailed discussion on: Factors around slaughter affecting the quality
of pig meat; Neonatal mortality in the pig; Diet and management of weaner
pigs; Genetic selection - which way forward?; The effectiveness of current pig
vaccines; Nutrition-reproduction interactions in the breeding sow; and,
Pre-mating management of the gilt. Each area is significant. The 43 one-page
Abstracts come under the headings of Meat Quality; The Young Pig; The
Growing Pig; Behaviour and Environment; Behaviour, Environment and
Genetics; Health; and, The Breeding Pig. |
